Stirling Albion 1 Scotland 6

The SSFA under 18 squad made a positive step forward in their preparations for this season’s Centenary Shield campaign which begins on the last day of February with a game against Republic of Ireland in Athlone.

A defeat last week of 2-1 by a strong Australia side was ‘laid to rest’ by Scotland when Stirling Albion offered, at short notice, a game on Sunday 4th February at Forthbank astro, Stirling.

The Scotland squad took the opportunity to find some form as they ran out 6-1 winners.

The international squad were short of five players due to injury, illness or club commitments but together the team took a large step forward with a convincing display.

Callum Graham started the ball rolling when after six minutes his cross cum shot evaded everyone and ended up in the far corner of the Stirling Albion net.

The home team responded almost immediately with a counter attack goal scored by Greg Harrower.

Flynn Mackay restored the visitor’s lead in 19 minutes after good work by Jack Allan and the mid field of Matt Fletcher and Stuart McDowell grew in control of the game.

Mackay scored his second goal after good build up play on the left and Scotland held a comfortable 3-1 lead at half time.

The second half started with a few personnel and positional changes for the SSFA team as the coaches tried out some different partnerships.

Callum Graham notched his second goal with a cool 14 yard finish after good combination play on the right.

Jacob Shields who missed the Australia game due to illness was next to join the goal scorer’s list with a smart front post finish after great build up play down the right.

The Scotland defence looked much more together in this game and stand by defender Charlie Brown of Ayrshire SFA slotted in with great comfort to cover the absence of others unable to play.

Flynn Mackay notched his hat trick goal at the back post as Scotland retained control of the game to the final whistle.

There were no failures in the game for the SSFA side who now look forward to another prep game on 14th Feb at Renfrew, with a 2.00 pm kick off against Glasgow University u20’s.

Then comes the trip to Athlone for the first Centenary Shield game.

Thanks to Stirling Albion for offering, at short notice, this much needed prep game – very much appreciated.
