St. Ninian’s High School, Giffnock beat Beardsen Academy 1-0 at the Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie, on Friday afternoon to lift the Senior Shield for the first time.
The final was the last game in the 2020 Senior Shield. A competition that started in September 2019 and was suspended , at semi-final stage, in March 2020 due to the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic. Only one semi-final was played between Woodmill High and St. Ninian’s High as St John’s RC High had to withdraw due to being unable to take part.
St Ninian’s High’s path to the final was:
- Bye into 2nd round
- 2nd round – September 2019 – 6-0 win over Douglas Acdemy at home
- 3rd round – November 2019 – 3-1 win over Barrhead High at home
- 4th round – December 2019 – 4-0 win over Park Mains High away
- 5th round – January 2020 – 3-0 win over Broughton High at home
- 6th round – February 2020 – 3-1 win over Notre Dame High away
- Semi-final – May 2021 – After a 3-3 draw with Woodmill High, St Ninian’s won on penalties at the Excelsior Stadium
Bearsden Academy’s path to the final was:
- 1st round – September 2019 – 4-1 win over Gryffe High away
- 2nd round – October 2019 – 4-0 win over Our Lady and St Patrick’s High at home
- 3rd round – November 2019 – 4-0 win over Holyrood Secondary at home
- 4th round – December 2019 – 6-0 win over Braidhurst High at home
- 5th round – January 2020 – 3-1 win over Ross High away
- Semi-final – May 2021 – St John’s RC High withdrew from the competition
