Fife Seniors off to a winning start

In the first game of this season’s SSFA National Trophy for inter association competition at senior level it was Fife SFA who got off to a winning start beating Forth Valley SFA 3 -2.

The game played in windy conditions at New Central Park, Kelty was a harsh lesson for the visitors, current holders of the trophy, who learned that you cannot give a good team a three goal start and expect to win. Nevertheless, in a much improved second half performance, Forth Valley showed good spirit and pulled the game back to a closer affair.

Fife started brightly and were one up after only four minutes. The Forth Valley defence failed to spot mid fielder Finlay Allan at the edge of the box as they prepared to defend a free kick. When the kick was taken short Allan fired in a shot from twenty yards to put his side one ahead.

Worse was to come for Forth Valley. A misplaced pass in the box landed at Allan’s feet and the Levenmouth Academy player fired home to double Fife’s lead after only eleven minutes.

The visitors just could not get into the game and after twenty one minutes found themselves three down when Jude Black ( Woodmill HS) shot home from 15 yards out to make it 3 – 0.

Forth Valley made some tactical changes and drew a goal back before half time when Greg Harrower ( Balfron HS) netted a rebound when Fife keeper Owain Clark could only parry out a Josh Moore shot.

Forth Valley needed a quick second half start but Fife kept control of the game in the now blustery conditions.
Eventually, through a goal from Paul O’Hara, Forth Valley scored again. The St Modan’s HS player dribbled well in the box making space for a shot to the far corner. With ten minutes to go this could have set up a nervy finish but Fife again showed good control and despite their fighting efforts Forth Valley couldn’t find an equaliser

Fife now meet Lanarkshire in their next group game – the date still to be confirmed.

Forth Valley will meet the fourth member of the group, West Lothian SFA, on 10th November at Ochilview.
